US search engine giant Google has slipped on economic and social-networking banana peels, reporting fourth-quarter results that missed analyst views.

Amid fears of a recession, the Web search leader’s miss came two days after archrival Yahoo disappointed investors with weak earnings and a timid outlook.

Google’s quarter was hampered by several factors, including dips in ad spending by travel and financial companies, George Reyes, Google’s chief financial officer, said in a conference call with analysts. But he called the dips “seasonal.”

More than that, Google co-founder Sergey Brin said the company is having trouble selling as many ads as expected on partner site MySpace and other social networking sites.

“I don’t think we have the killer best way to advertise and monetize social networks yet,” Brin said. “Some of the things that we were working on in Q4 didn’t really pan out.”

Google shares were down about 7% after hours, after it released the results. Investors are worried the recession will slow Google’s ad growth. Its stock is down 18% on the year, about twice as much as the Nasdaq composite.

The company still dominates search. In the U.S. last quarter, 56% of online searches were done through Google, vs. 50% a year earlier, says comScore Networks. The traffic numbers indicate that Google is showing no signs of losing ground to Yahoo or Microsoft, says Youssef Squali, an analyst for Jefferies & Co.

“Google owns the search market at an increasing rate,” he said. “They are getting (more) share even though they already own more than half of the market.” But a recession would be cause for concern, analysts say.
